Cold Email Reply Rates in 2026, and What They Mean for Networking

Every published cold email reply-rate benchmark we could verify, from Instantly, Hunter, Belkins, Sales.co, Woodpecker and hireEZ, with how each was measured and what it means for students emailing bankers and consultants.

Every benchmark, and what it measured

Each figure is quoted from the publisher’s own report. They are not comparable with each other: some count automatic replies, some count follow-ups, and each one measures a single vendor’s own customers.

What Paperclip’s networking emails get

Reply rates on first emails
OutreachReply rate
Paperclip, sent to verified addresses from the student's own inbox7 to 12%
Typical cold email1 to 5%

Paperclip's figure comes from its own send history: personal emails to analysts and associates at verified addresses, alumni first, with follow-ups that stop when someone replies.

Three things separate these from sales email: each note goes to one person who fits the firms you picked, it names what you share (usually your school), and it comes from your own address, so the reply lands with you.

Other published data on students emailing professionals

Outside Paperclip, we found no published reply rate on students emailing bankers, consultants or alumni for a conversation. The closest is a 2022 Holy Cross economics thesis in which a student emailed alumni asking them to fill out a survey; its public abstract gives no reply rate and the full text is restricted. The nearest measured case is recruiters writing to individual candidates about a job, at about 15% (hireEZ).

What moves the number

Two findings from Hunter’s 2026 report, across 31 million emails, show what changes the reply rate:

For a student, the personal detail that matters most is a shared school, then a shared firm or hometown. Write to one alum at a time, say who you are in a sentence, name what you have in common, and ask for 15 minutes about their experience. Send one or two short follow-ups if there is no reply, and stop when they answer. Our cold email templates and follow-up templates are written that way.

Does the tool matter?

Less than the email. Sales tools such as Hunter, lemlist and Instantly send whatever you write, from your inbox, with follow-ups. They change how many emails go out and whether follow-ups happen, not what the recipient thinks of the note. We compared 40 tools students use, on what each finds, writes and sends, in our networking tools comparison.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good reply rate for cold email?

For sales email, the large 2026 studies put the average between 0.45% and 4.5% depending on how replies are counted. Sales.co found 2.66% of emails got a reply of any kind, but only 0.70% got one from a person. lemlist calls 8% or more positive replies excellent. Recruiters emailing candidates average about 15% (hireEZ).

Which cold email tool has the best reply rate for networking?

Sales tools such as Instantly, Hunter and lemlist report 0.45% to 4.5% across their customers, mostly sales teams, because they send whatever you write to whoever is on your list. Paperclip’s networking emails get 7 to 12%: each one goes to a single analyst or associate who fits your targets, alumni from your school first, from your own inbox, with follow-ups that stop when they reply.

Why do networking emails get answered more than sales emails?

The published data points the same way: smaller, personal sends do better. Hunter found 6.2% replies for sequences to 21 to 50 people against 2.4% for lists over 500, and 5.6% for emails with two personalized details against 3.6% with none. A student writing to an alum about a 15-minute call is the small, personal case, and recruiters writing to individual candidates about a specific job average about 15% (hireEZ).

Do follow-up emails help?

Yes, and the benchmarks count them: Instantly’s 3.43% includes replies to follow-ups. Keep follow-ups short, send one or two, and stop when the person replies.

Do auto-replies count in reply rates?

In some studies. Sales.co’s 2.66% includes them, and more than half of its replies were automatic. Belkins excludes auto-replies and bounces, which is one reason its 0.45% is lower. Always check how a figure is counted before comparing it.
