Coffee Chat Thank-You Email: Template and Example

Write a specific thank-you after a networking call, mention what you learned, and follow through without turning the note into a favor request.

What to include

Include appreciation, a specific takeaway, and a realistic next action. The same day or next day is a practical habit, not an employer deadline.

Make sure the takeaway reflects what they actually said. If they offered a resume review, attach the version you want reviewed. Otherwise, focus on the conversation rather than introducing a new favor.

Replace this example with your own notes. A real detail is more useful than elaborate praise.

How to stay in touch

Record the advice and set a reminder to complete the action, rather than simply send another email. Finishing a suggested project or reaching a relevant milestone can provide a useful reason to reconnect.

For example: “I worked through the resource you suggested and used it to improve my project analysis. Thank you for pointing me toward it.” Send that only if it is true. A thank-you does not require a reply; avoid chasing an acknowledgment.

Frequently asked questions

What if I forgot to send a thank-you the next day?

Send a short, sincere note when you remember. Avoid a long apology or inventing a reason for the delay.
